I had a baby shower at my Mom's house back in August, about one month prior to Brighton's arrival date. Shawn and I were blessed to receive so many useful gifts that I couldn't imagine surviving without on a daily basis! As we all know, babies spit up, sweat, sneeze, touch everything, get sticky, accumulate lint between their fingers and toes, get oily hair, and just need a bath. I can't wait to use the blow up rubber ducky bath from my friend and husband's coworker Lorraine! It will be so much fun to see Brighton's face light up as she splashes around during bath time - a fun time and a safe event!
I remember Brighton's first bath at 4 days old. My Mom was spending the week with me while Shawn was at work so she assisted me with bath time. I used one of the many different brands of baby wash/shampoo that I had received at my shower. This particular bottle was "tear free". I felt like such a great Mom giving my new baby her first bath while making sure that she was safe and free from harm or pain!
When Shawn got home I told him about our day and we started discussing the ingredients in the baby wash that I had used on Brighton. I got all of the bottles out of the bathroom and attempted to read off the list of ingredients. The words were so long and foreign to me that I sounded like a 5 year old learning to read! Because I was so uneducated about the products I was putting on my child's skin I began to do some research and even spoke with two different friends who are scientists, both with a PhD. To my amazement I found that some of the ingredients are carcinogens, or cancer causing. I also had no idea that the products we purchase at the grocery or drug stores are self regulated within their own company which means their is no standardized testing required for these types of products. The FDA also does not regulate them.
Did you know that in Europe certain carcinogenic ingredients are banned from products like baby wash and other shampoos and lotions, but not in the United States? The same companies produce products for both Europe and the US and put the harmful products in the US products. Why would a fellow American allow such harmful products to be used in the products that a large percentage of us use? Well, that's easy. They don't use them!
Before you dismiss this, go to your bathroom and check some labels. You’ll find Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Propylene Glycol (not to mention dozens of other chemicals) in toothpastes, conditioners, cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and many other common products …
….. You and your loved ones use several times, every day
Could these ingredients possibly have any long-term side effects?
