Setting the Vitamin Standard

When choosing your supplements, who can you trust?
By:  Dr. Steve and Suzanne Chaney

This is a big question that most people don't take the time to investigate.

Let me tell you a story...Dr. Chaney, a professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, was at an Herbal Conference sponsored by UNC.  At lunch he sat next to a gentleman who worked for a Whitehall Robins, the company that manufactures Centrum.  Centrum is the leading selling over the counter vitamin supplement.  Dr. Chaney asked him since Whitehall Robins is a pharmaceutical company surely they manufacture Centrum according to pharmaceutical standards.

"Well, no not really was the his answer."  He said, "The CFO would never stand for it."

Thus the buyer of Centrum cannot be sure that what is on the level is in every single tablet in the bottle.

Just for comparison, Shaklee does 349 quality control tests on EVERY SINGLE batch of Vita Lea, their multivitamin/multimineral supplment.  You can be assured that what is on the label is in EVERY table tin the bottle.  And because of the clinical studies Shaklee does you can be assured that all of the nutrients are bioavailable for your body to use.

Harry Shurley, a pharmacist was aksed, "Why do you take Shaklee vitmains when you can get other brands as samples for free?"

He replied, "From a pharmacist's view I have to look at the clinical research."  He continued,  "I am writig a book on prenatal nutrition with a colleague.  We requested clinical studies from the makers of prenatal vitamins and NO major company except Shaklee could provide us with any studies."

He also commented that the Shaklee vitamins are natural as opposed to the synthetic prenatal vitamins available in drug stores.  He ended his comments by saying, "There are so many reasons why I take Shaklee over the other vitamins I can get from pharmaceutical companies.  I don't have time to explain it all, but the main reason is because Shaklee vitamins produce results!"

Shaklee really does go the extra mile.  The Shaklee supplements are beyond organic.  You may ask what does that mean?  Let me explain.  The organic farmer cannot control what is in the air that surrounds their crops nor can he control what is in the water that he uses to water his fields.  Shaklee tests for over 350 toxins that pollute air and water to make sure that the organically grown crops are not contaminated.  This is an example of how Shaklee goes the extra mile.

The May 2004 issue of Consumers Report has an article on the "Dirty Dozen" bad ingredients in nutritional supplements.  Shaklee is the ONLY nutrition company that has NEVER used any of these ingredients.  That speaks volumes for Shaklee's science and integrity.

Shaklee science is not hype as seen in other nutritional products.  For example a B Complex vitamin containing 75 mg of each B vitamin is not a balanced B Complex supplement.  Some B vitamins are needed in milligram amounts and others in microgram amounts.  Not all herbs belong in a multivitamin.  For example some multivitamins contain Echinacea which is an occasional use herb.  IF it is consumed daily, the white blood cells no longer are stimulated by the Echinacea when there is a bacterial or viral challenge.

A single delivery system is not optimal for all nutrients.  Several companies produce a sublingual vitamin supplement.  Sublingual absorption is not efficient for all nutrients.  This is why Shaklee has four delivery systems in their Vitlaizer product.

High purity individual supplements are not the answer.  One needs all the naturally occurring forms of Vitamin E, the carotenoids, and omega-3 fatty acids in balance.  For example, if one takes a pure alpha tocopherol, the other forms of vitamin E are blocked.  They perform functions that the alpha tocopherol does not...all the natural forms of vitamin E have a purpose and need to be included in a vitamin E supplement.  A natural vitamin is more effectively utilized by the body.  Natural vitamin E is retained 4-6 times longer than synthetic vitamin E.

Summing it up:

1.  Integrity:  Only make products of proven benefit.
2.  Cooperation with nature:  Shaklee makes products as natural as possible
3.  Product quality:  What's on the label is in each tablet.
4.  Clinical Proof:  What's in the tablet gets into your bloodstream and has the intended effect.

The Shaklee Difference explains why Shaklee is the #1 nutritional company in the U.S.
